The present and future of our country depend on the level of physical education of students. In this regard, it is very important to realize the trends in the minds of modern students in terms of personal physical training and state approaches to physical education and sports. Research methodology and organization. An online survey was conducted among students of the Yelets State University studying undergraduate and secondary vocational education programs. The obtained results were compared with earlier studies and target-settings of state documents on the development of physical education and sport in Russia. Conclusions. 1. The studies have shown that the vast majority of students understand the importance of physical education. 2. A decrease in students' interest in compulsory physical exercise and an increase in amateur forms of motor activity were noted. This point is facilitated by the growing level of students' knowledge of physical training and sports, as well as the growing popularity of specialized gadgets and fitness applications. 3. Currently, the target-setting of students systematically engaged in physical education and sports (it should be 80% by 2020) is not being met almost twice. It has also been noted that there is very little interest among students to pass the GTO* standards (10–14%). This point should focus on fundamental changes in the approach to physical education of young students at both federal and regional levels.
